Walleye are one of the most popular game fish on a Canadian fly in fishing trip. These excellent eating fish are found in most lakes in NW Ontario. They are typically in 8-15' of water on reefs, points and cabbage weeds. The most productive way to fish walleye is with jigs or Lindy rigs tipped with live bait such as leeches, crawlers, or minnows. The best eater sized walleye are in the 15-18" range. It is always helpful to bring a few marker buoys to toss out when you get a walleye to work that same area and if you get another one, to do the same. This will help create a line along the depth or structure that the walleye are feeding on and will increase your catch rate. Stained water lakes typically have the best walleye fishing and the fish do not go as deep. On clear cold water lakes, walleye will be found slightly deeper and a slight chop on the water or cloudy overcast days make fishing easier.
