Guest Comments: Second trip of the year, this time on Highrock. It is a particularly picturesque lake. The weather and fishing were a bit more challenging than at other times, which made the many fish caught even more rewarding. Targeted only walleye. Generally, they were smaller than we’re accustomed to, but there was a 26” hoss in the mix and several in the 22”- 23” range. On this trip, less was more. Bouncing a crawler along the bottom worked better than active jigging. As always, the accommodations and equipment were exceptional. I don’t understand how Lucas, Nicole, and Hunter can so consistently arrange for boat motors, generators, appliances, and airplanes to work so flawlessly, but they do. There simply can’t exist a better outfitter anywhere in the north woods. Already booked for next summer.

Guest Comments: Fishing was good. We found walleye in 12-18' of water. Ledges and drop offs provided good smallmouth. Northerns were caught in the "deep weeds". Presentations were slow. Jigging 1/8 oz jig heads with 4" split tail plastics worked best. We did troll some crawler harnesses but found the jigging was best for the larger fish.

Guest Comments: In the 5 days we were here we fished for all the species in the lake. We were able to catch 9 lake trout in the 5 days. We caught them in 40-80 ft of water. We trolled with deep diving crank baits about 20-25 feet deep. We caught approximately 25 northern with most being between 27-31" with the biggest being 34". The larger smallmouth were in deeper water and the biggest were caught when trolling for lake trout. Few were found around the rock reefs and weeds. Most smallmouth were in 20' of water with some being caught when trolling at 90'!! Largest smallmouth was about 19".

Guest Comments: Eric Lake is a walleye "factory". We caught 160 walleyes in 4 days with 3 of us. Most were in the 18-20 inch range. We also caught some great sized bass and several Northerns. The lake is small but doesn't seem small. What is nice about that is that you can get to all the great spots in less than 10 minutes. The boats are 16 footers... larger than the ones at many outposts.
The new cabin is great and set up perfectly. The dock, fish cleaning, storage, and generator are perfectly situated. It's a well thought out and comfortable outpost .

We loved fishing off the dock. We caught carp, and a couple of bluegills, so many walleye, and some perch. Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!

We weren't fishing for Northern, but caught them all over the lake. Color seemed to matter more than usual - red one day then green the next day. With the high water, the falls are beautiful. Guest Comments: 5 Bluebird days, no wind and full moon made fishing a bit tougher than expected, especially on Jones Lake where we had to fish very slow off points in 15-22 feet for walleyes with live bait. Jones is a deep lake with very little structure. Primary fishing spots are off the several points on the lake and weed bed areas in several bays. We still caught some really nice fish in Jones: 40” Northern, 24” Walleye and Smallies 15-19". Just did not have the numbers that we caught in the river and in Eltrut.
We had our best luck in the river system connecting Jones to Eltrut where creek channels connect with the river. There we caught lots of Smallies 19” and up, with the largest at 22” Walleyes in the river averaged much larger 17”-20” vs average on Jones was 14”-17”. Be patient in the river and work off the bottom slow vs casting. Ned rigs and jigs with a crawler were killers in the eddies. Traditional casting techniques did not work as well in the river.
Eltrut Lake was well worth the 45 minute boat ride. We went there 3 days and caught lots of walleyes, bass and northern. Eltrut has lots of structure, islands and rock piles holding fish. We were able to catch all species in much shallower water without having to use live bait. Trolling traps along structure…..Casting ned rigs off structure……Casting swim baits with 3-4” tails off 1/4 oz big eye jigs were killers also, White grubs were best. Was also extremely fun catching huge smallies on top water. Best lure without question was the Whopper Popper in a green color. If you are going to Jones/Eltrut, do not go without several of these. Cast them in along the boulders and rock piles and simply reel in at a good clip and hang on!!!!!
Jones Lake cabin is the best cabin I have personally stayed in over some 15 fly in trips over the years. We loved the huge screened in porch, the great enclosed fish cleaning station. A great facility.

Lots of pike, biggest 34" on #5 Mepps. Also caught sunfish, perch, and rock bass. Beautiful lake! Lucas and Nicole run the best operation.

We had to learn the lake but quickly found our favorite spots and caught lots of smallmouth, big walleye, and lots of northerns including a couple of giants (40"). Maybe it was us, but no fish hardly in the shallow water or on the bottom. 10-20 feet held excellent numbers of huge smallmouth. Trolling green/black hard baits yielded all species at 12-15 feet deep. Day to day variation was obvious, stay confident, the fish are out there.

Guest Comments: As usual the fishing was incredible. Three 23" walleye off the dock in the first 1/2 hour of fishing. Very large smallmouth bass on the rocks, several over 4#. Caught hundreds of northern pike on weed lines with spinner baits and top water. One northern at 37". Walleye were very "fat" with certain points where we caught 10-20 fish in 20 minutes. Rapids in lower lake produced big numbers of both bass and walleye. Incredible fishery!!! Lucas and Nicole are fantastic hosts! Everything was well done.

Guest Comments: Lots of great fishing. Big bass along the shores biting almost everything. Great walleye along the reef and along the two outlets/inlets on the North side of the lake. Trolling and casting for northerns in the weedy bays and along the reef produced lots of great big fish. Had some trouble finding fish that were small enough to keep which was fun. Every fish was a bit strong as they fought as if they were 5" bigger than they really were. Very picture-esc fish with great color and big shoulders which made for great memories.

Guest Comments: Came in and our first 2 days were really hot, high 90's. Fishing was a little slower and everything we found was in the shallows. Day 3 it cooled down after a big storm and the fishing started picking up. Pike and bass hitting right off the rock shelves and were running a little deeper. Group of 8 guys and the group best was 34.5" pike, 25" walleye, and 19" bass. We averaged about 65 fish per person over 5 days. Overall we had a great trip. Great job Gateway.

Had to hunt for Walleye, finding the majority through the Highrock portage and on Fishtrap behind the cabin. The biggest number and size were caught there as well. Guest Comments: Day one was a little slow but by lunch time on day two we had the smallmouth figured out. Caught them up in the rapids and in the back of grassy coves on swim baits, grubs and road runners. As the water got warmer the bass started to move up shallower. We found Eltrut was 10°F warmer and they should be spawning any day now. Once we found the walleye we we’re pulling out 18”-20” walleyes like it was nothing, we even caught 3 that were over 26”. By the end of the trip we were so tired of catching massive smallies we we would hook a 4 pounder and we’re try to get it to shake the hook at the boat so we didn’t have to mess with it. Everyone in our group caught multiple bass over 20 inches.

Guest Comments: The weather was cold and rainy for the first few days with high winds but the fishing was still good. The bass were still in pre-spawn but we caught good numbers with good size. The northern bite was good with several caught in the 34-36 inch range. Lake trout were plentiful and we caught them trolling as well as on lures when we were bass fishing. The accommodations were spot on as usual and the wood heater was put to good used a couple of nights. Lucas and Nicole are the perfect hosts and we are booked for next year.

Guest Comments: Great week! Cabin, boats, and all were really great. Really cold this week with lots of rain and wind! Even being a week or 2 before the spawn, the bass fishing was awesome! Average bass were around 14-17" with a few over 19" and the record being 19.75". The pike were just average with the largest being 37" and a number around 33". There were a couple tiger muskie caught, 33" and largest at 40". (the 40" tiger was caught on an ultra light with 8# mono. It was mind blowing!) Another year with regular muskie too. Where were these dudes hiding in years past?! Muskie at 37", and 2 monsters at 46" and 48". The lake trout were amazing. We must have caught 20 as a group this week with Doug breaking Rob's 30" record on the last day with a 33" laker. Really fun to catch! Really awesome week!

Guest Comments: Great opportunities, battled some windy, rainy, and cool weather. Water temps started in the mid 50's and ended in the low 50's. Plenty of walleye on live bait, the best smallmouth fishing was below the North rapids. Largest smallmouth bass was 5.5#, 30" walleye, lots of northerns on West side of Jones, Eltrut was good when the wind was down for walleye and bass. Used a white chatter bait or spinner bait with a white trailer.

From Day 1 Lucas and Nicole have responded to all the emails with questions and over the years kept us in the loop on all the changes going. Lake Trout fishing was new to us and even though Lucas was extremely busy trying to prep for the upcoming season he spent time with us showing us where to fish and how to fish for lake trout and even shared a few of his favorite lake trout recipes. The cabin at Dogfly is absolutely amazing. Everything with the cabin and boats worked perfect. The weather wasn’t great and even snowed on us one day but the fishing made it all worth it! We had a blast catching Lake Trout (largest 30") and also a large number of quality northern with the largest being 41”
